Okay, let me just start off by saying at least Nintendo tried… I think. But this game was horrible. I believe it was Nintendo’s effort to try to satisfy the “retro gamers” who just don’t buy into Nintendo’s NUMEROUS lame and cheaply made G rated multi-player games, that the Wii is primarily known for. “Shovelware” is a term I learned a few days ago to describe these types of games, because they are shoveled out continuously and in great number with quality not being important. But, anyone who has knowledge of Nintendo’s past games and consoles can tell you that Nintendo has forsaken it’s loyal fanbase, who’s first system was most likely the NES, to instead focus on making games for the casual gamer. TRANSLATION: They make games for Grand Parents and 3 year olds now. So with pretty much Nintendo’s only service to their once devoted fans being that Nintendo has put their video game characters, some in 8 bit sprite form, on T-shirts, jackets, wristbands, and other junk you can buy at a dark, smelly, and emo store at the mall…(WOW, THEY WAITED UNTIL MOST OF THEIR LOYAL FANS WERE IN THEIR 20′S ~THUS MOST LIKELY HAVING AN INCOME OF THEIR OWN~ TO START HEAVILY PUSHING THIS TYPE OF MERCHANDISE. COINCIDENCE OR A WELL THOUGHT OUT MARKETING PLAN TO GET YOUR MONEY!!??!!) did I expect them to handle this game properly? YES. YES, I did. And I am stupid for thinking that way! First off, I am all for going back and revisiting the classic formula that worked so well for so many games many years ago. Simpler was better. These days (USUALLY) the prettiest first person shooter with online capabilities (No matter how good or bad those capabilities are. Read some reviews for games like this without online capabilities. People slam them for not having an online option) is heralded as a good game, despite it’s lack of originality or quality. So yeah, I’d be happy to go back to when gaming was a hobby and not a sport/ way of life (mostly for the hardcore MMO fanboys). Some things are just better in 2D anyway… But did Nintendo pull off that classic formula here, like they promised fans they would? In my opinion, not really. First of all, if you’re going to make a retro game, make it like Megaman 9 and 10… same type of graphics and music as the originals, it’s just that you use today’s technology to max those two things, graphics and music, out to their peaks. Instead, we get a side scroller with your typical Wii/ Gamecube graphics. (BECAUSE THE WII IS JUST A GAME CUBE WITH A MOTION CONTROL!!!) I WANT 8 BIT MARIO DANG IT!!! And the music is atrocious! If you are into elevator music that has people singing “BOP” in the song, OH BOY!!! ARE YOU IN FOR A TREAT!!! If you’d sing some of the original tracks from the original Mario Bros. you’d have numerous people in a room stop what they are doing and start singing with you. If you tried singing this stuff from this game, you’d get punched in the face for being annoying and upsetting people. It’s a fact of life. I’d prefer the soundtrack of the original Pong game to this game’s music! Now let’s talk about the controls and how the game plays out. You see kids back in my day, if there were two or more players on screen, they could usually walk through each other and not hurt each other. Some games like “Super Double Dragon” for the Super Nintendo, had a game play mode where the two players on screen could hit and damage each other, but for the most part this was usually the case in most games…you couldn’t hurt the other player on screen. Well the makers of this game decided, they shouldn’t make this game enjoyable and decided that when you jump if you land on the other player, you bounce off involuntarily…which this leads to dying numerous times, and thus restating numerous levels… ROCK ON!!! If I want to use the other players as trampolines, I should have to hit a button while jumping downward to do this, not just jump to avoid enemies or get an item, and when I come down *BOUNCE* off the cliff I go for the 100th time!!! If I jump I should come back down, and be able to fall through the other players. This seriously, is the worst thing wrong with this game for me, if it wasn’t for the frustration level involved with this…I probably would have given this game a 4!!! That being said, this game was pretty horrible with 2 players, but when we tried 3…you could best describe what happened by saying, “No body had any fun!” Lastly, despite this trying to be a retro game, the Wii’s motion controller still had to poke it’s ugly head in the door. For instance, when you get the propeller hat, you have to do a tilting motion with the Wii remote to jump. Not a big deal right? Well, when you come down, sometimes you fly too high and go off screen so you have no clue when you’ll come back down, you’ll be coming down directly over a hole WITH NO WAY TO AVOID FALLING and *BOOM* you died again. You see in a lot of older games, if you were over a hole, you could sometimes maneuver you character to try to get onto a ledge and land on it/ pull yourself up before dying. But, I guess, since they did the stupid thing, and assigned a motion to flying instead of a button or button combination, that’s not really an option! Yeah, that just reaks of total awesomeness… So this game gets 2 stars for kind of trying, but not getting it anywhere near close to what this should have been. Nintendo has done the fans who grew up playing there consoles another disservice, the first being abandoning there usual fanbase to market to old people and little kids for some easy money, by making this game. Yeah, thanks guys!!!
